Premise
Around 2030, aliens approached Earth and asked for shelter. After a couple of years of negotiation, both sides reached an agreement: the aliens would give humanity a cure for cancer in exchange for being allowed to settle in Earth’s underground.
By the year 2080, you play as a young adult alien. You are a tour guide for humans, showing them the alien underground city called Kara Den. The aliens have three races: the Elinvile, the Dwarfs, and the Chrome-forge. The Elinvile resemble elves โ bluish-toned skin, tall stature, blue eyes, long white hair, pointed ears, and glowing skin. Dwarfs look like classic dwarfs: short, with abundant red facial hair and a broad nose. Chrome-forge is an artificial alien race โ essentially robots โ with a metallic sheen, rounded features, standing roughly 2 meters tall, and very strong.
Kara Den โ Kara in Turkish means black or dark; den in Germanic and Scandinavian languages means a shelter.
Aliens are generally not permitted on Earth’s surface (with some exceptions). However, humans are welcome to visit Kara Den. There is a hub called Platform 7 where humans can access the underground city via an elevator system โ 10 elevators arranged in a circle. Visitors from the surface can enter quickly through the hub, but there are human passport controls on the exit side. Five elevators handle arrivals (from Earth to Kara Den) and five handle departures (from Kara Den to Earth). It is organized similarly to a border crossing between the USA and Canada.
Geographically, the underground city is located in Nevada, near Las Vegas.
The goal of the game is to build rich worldbuilding, but the story itself is mundane: the protagonist’s father has fallen ill and they must find a cure. The richness of the worldbuilding comes from the level design and artifacts tangential to the main story โ telling the story of the aliens' assimilation on Earth. For example: graffiti on the wall reading “Earth for Humans.”
Story
You are Alar (or Alara), a young alien giving tours to humans around the alien underground city of Kara Den. One of the tourist locations is the Singing Garden, which provides the city’s inhabitants with food and fresh air.
Cutscene 1 โ Livestream. You are making a livestream and showing your audience the wonders of the underground city. During the livestream, there are brief interactions with the tourists.
Game starts. The tourists leave. You receive your first quest: Pest Control. You need to go to the Singing Garden and eliminate 20 mutated mice. This also serves as the tutorial.
After completing the tutorial, you receive a text message from Mahta, your father’s doctor. He tells you that your father has fallen ill with an incurable, deadly disease called “Alanhary Syndrome” and asks you to help bring your father to his office. This triggers a quest.
Note: Alanhary Syndrome is an incurable disease, but it takes years before causing the patient’s death. This aligns with the casual aspect of the gameplay and does not create a sense of urgency. That fact should be clearly communicated to the player.
You visit your father, Roran. He is sitting in his armchair watching YouTube on the TV. His glow is flickering. After a brief conversation, you escort your father to Mahta’s office. Mahta attempts a healing procedure, but it does not work. You escort your father back to his apartment.
Shortly after, you receive a message from your Chrome-forge friend Jeromi. They say they have heard about your father’s illness and know of a traditional healer named Worgan who may be able to cure him. This triggers a quest to visit Worgan.
On the way to Worgan’s place, you must fight mobs (mutated mice). Worgan needs some ingredients that can only be found in the Dark Forest: 3 dark mushrooms and 2 purple mushrooms. This triggers a gathering quest.
You bring the mushrooms to Worgan. He brews the medicine and gives it to you.
You bring the medicine to your father and he tries it. His glow stabilizes briefly, then falls back to flickering.
Shortly after, you receive a message from your human friend Maya. She says she has been researching your father’s condition and believes there is an illegal human drug that could help him. This triggers a quest to find a drug dealer known as Jacket Kid in the maintenance corridors โ a network of tunnels that is partially alien-built and mostly part of the Las Vegas underground.
On the way to meet Jacket Kid, you must fight mobs (Malfunctioned Bots). Jacket Kid wants $5,000 in exchange for the illegal drug. You must spend time farming crafting ingredients from mobs, crafting items, and selling them to vendors Ahita, Maya, and Jeromi. You can also harvest fruits in the Singing Garden and sell them.
Design note: The $5,000 goal should not take longer than the average quest in real game time. The exact amount should be balanced after playtesting โ it may be more or less than $5,000. The intent of this quest is to give the player variety in how they earn the money โ not a single on-rails task like “collect that specific item” or “kill that many mobs” โ while still requiring roughly the same effort as a normal quest.
Cutscene 2 โ Back Alley Deal. After collecting the required amount, you give the money to Jacket Kid โ but he refuses to hand over the drug.
You must fight Jacket Kid (first boss fight) and his minions (drones) to take the drug by force. The drug is in a safe; you must crack the safe. You retrieve the drug. You give it to your father; it shows more promising results than the mushroom medicine, with his glow stabilizing for a longer period โ but it still falls back to flickering.
You receive a message from Worgan. He says he has been studying journals from 40โ50 years ago and found mentions of a cave called the Crystal Sanctuary. The crystalline structures there are said to emit frequencies with healing properties. The location is unknown, but records may have been left in the old foundry. This triggers a quest to go to the old foundry and find those records.
At the old foundry, you find records mentioning a geologist named Olivia Parker. The last known record of her is from 10 years ago, when she was working at the initial spaceship landing site. This triggers a quest to visit the landing site.
You arrive at the spaceship landing site. Olivia is still there, working alongside a few others.
Cutscene 3 โ Meet Olivia. A conversation with Olivia about the Crystal Sanctuary.
Olivia confirms that one of her expeditions, 23 years ago, found the Crystal Sanctuary. She believes she has some journal entries in her archives. She goes to a drawer and searches through the records. She finds a map to the Crystal Sanctuary, but unfortunately half of it is missing. You decide to follow the path on the torn map as far as it goes and figure out the next step from there. This triggers a quest.
You reach the point where the path on the torn map terminates. You find a junkyard, and among the scrap you discover a Chrome-forge living there, named Cornelius.
Cutscene 4 โ Half a Map.
Cornelius, despite belonging to the robotic Chrome-forge race, has lost their mind after decades of living alone. Attempting to speak with them leads nowhere โ they only repeat one word: “Cinema!” This triggers a quest to scavenge parts from the junkyard and assemble a TV from scraps.
After you give the TV to Cornelius, clarity returns to them, and you are finally able to ask about the Crystal Sanctuary. Cornelius gives you the second half of the map. This triggers a quest to travel to the Crystal Sanctuary.
You travel to the location, but a boss mob guards the entrance to the Crystal Sanctuary cave. You must defeat the boss and his minions. After winning the second boss fight, you receive a puzzle quest to match crystals to activate the Crystal Sanctuary.
Cutscene 5 โ Healing Father. Your father teleports to the cave and recovers from his illness.
Cutscene 6 โ Final Cutscene. The hero and Maya go to the surface of the Earth at night and look up at the starry sky. The hero admits they miss seeing the stars.

All gems have different affixes, such as increasing damage, decreasing cooldown, increasing the chance of a crit, adding resistance to armor, and increasing character stats like health, mana, energy, hunger, and thirst, as well as regeneration rates. At the top of the list are weak gems; at the bottom are the strongest gems. The affixes added to gems are random. The strength of the affixes depends on how strong the gem is. Gems can be inserted into weapons and armor. All weapons and armors have slots.
Gameplay Mechanics
The game design philosophy is to overscope and cut features toward the end. It is easier to cut scope during development than to add features when the initial excitement has fizzled out and it becomes a grind to the finish line.
Core Loop
Classic action RPG. Fight mobs, collect loot, craft items. There are only 3 types of loot: Entropy, Harmony, and Essence. Using the crafting system, combinations of these elements can produce different types of items: weapons, armor, and modifiers (affixes).
Teleportation
There is a portal system within the city. The city itself is a safe zone. The player has access to a mobile teleport, but it can only be used to return to the city โ you cannot teleport between locations outside the city.
Death and Respawning
On death, the character loses nothing โ no money, no items. The character respawns in the area one level lower than where they died. If an area is too high-level for the player, the game bumps the player back to a lower-level area with weaker mobs, requiring them โ if they wish to press on โ to traverse through it and level up naturally.
Economy and Vendors
Items can be sold to or bought from vendors Ahita and Jeromi. Maya’s souvenir shop also accepts certain items.
Leveling
On level up, all stats increase automatically. The player does not need to allocate stat points.
Inventory
Inventory is infinite.
Survival Stats
The player has five survival stats: health, mana, energy, hunger, and thirst.
- Hunger and Thirst: If supplies run low, the player must teleport back to the city to harvest food in the Singing Garden or buy from vendors. High hunger and thirst cause the character to move slower. Both can be restored by consuming food and beverages.
- Mana: Low mana disables certain weapons. Mana slowly recovers over time; recovery speed is determined by player stats and upgrade artifacts. It can also be restored with a Mana Elixir.
- Health: Reaching 0 health causes character death. Health slowly recovers over time; recovery speed is determined by player stats and upgrade artifacts. It can also be restored with a Health Elixir.
- Energy: Can be restored with caffeinated beverages or by sleeping. If energy drops to 0, the character is forced to fall asleep. Sleeping anywhere other than a bed dramatically reduces health, so the player must sleep in a bed to avoid the penalty.
Loot
Loot drops from dead mobs and is gravitationally attracted to the character โ similar to Minecraft โ rather than using chest mechanics as in World of Warcraft, where the player must click on corpses to loot them.
Open World
The game is open world with no loading screens between locations.
Cutscene Style
All cutscenes are presented in a livestream format, with live interactions from stream chat.
Player Complexity Management
To avoid overwhelming the player, there will never be more than 2โ3 choices presented at any time. For example, leveling up does not require distributing stat points โ numbers increase automatically.
The crafting system provides depth while remaining approachable. It starts with just 3 elements โ Entropy, Harmony, and Essence โ and recipes are unlocked one by one as the player crafts more items, similar to Minecraft’s progression. Crafting chains build naturally: 5 Entropy makes a Wooden Block, 3 Wooden Blocks make a Staff, 6 Wooden Blocks make a Wooden Hammer, 5 Entropy + 5 Harmony make a Steel Block, 3 Wooden Blocks + 3 Steel Blocks make a Steel Hammer. With only the 3 base elements, the player can theoretically craft any item in the world, though some items are more economical to farm than to craft directly.
The 3 elements were based on the Chinese concept of Yin and Yang. Yang is entropy โ it is chaos, it is grounded. Yin is harmony โ it is ordered and calm. Essence is the third element, which gives life and spirit. The drop rates reflect this: entropy is the most common, harmony drops at one-tenth the rate of entropy, and essence is one-hundredth as common as entropy. This is based on the 2nd law of thermodynamics: chaos is the most prevalent state in the universe, order is less common, and life is very rare.
Post-Game
After completing the main questline, the player is free to continue playing, fighting increasingly high-level mobs in the infinite procedurally generated areas.
Procedurally Generated Areas
Procedurally generated areas have no upper level limit. For example, the Dark Forest starts at level 5, and mob levels increase the deeper the player goes. Each area contains a safe zone where the player can respawn.
Procedurally generated areas have a baked area sort of entrance and then a procedural part.
