I now understand the motivation to found OpenAI. Having open technology in the wild creates the status quo and ensures mutual safety, kind of like how multiple countries having nuclear bombs prevents the beginning of World War III. I do not understand, though, why Elon Musk did not make his X.ai (his new AI company) open. For example, Meta released weights of Llama, which OpenAI and X.ai should do.
