I wish I could record my life and look back on VODs, because sometimes I am quite sure I did a thing, but I don’t have proof.

I don’t remember what I did on Friday. What happened on Friday stays on Friday. Happy Monday.

It all started with the cheese on the bottom. smh Google 🙂

While I was on my evening walk, I thought about a type of game called “Memory Palace.” It is not a game but a place in the game engine with an FPS look where you can store your memories: small notes, drawings, reminders, voice records, TODOs, calendars, maps, website links, screenshots. You can arrange them as much as you want.

I am picturing it as a house and you can put your memories on the walls, shelves, tables, in the bed, kitchen cabinets. It will help you memorize things and then when you need it, you can just picture that house in your mind and recall what you stored in it.

And I am thinking if it would be cool to have a VR version of it.

Also, you cannot delete things, but you can push your memories into the different dimension. And you would be able to visit that dimension if you want.

Also, you can personalize your house. If your house runs out of space, you can go and put things in the streets outside the house or add more houses.

And maybe make it online, allowing other players to visit your place.

We have so many productivity virtual worlds, but they are empty, meant to help you ‘focus’. I would love to have a cluttered place as possible. I like to have a lot of tabs in my browser; it helps my mind to wonder and come up with ideas. But tabs are one-dimensional; you only have web sites. I want to have more media: small drawings, some random pieces of text, voice memos, screenshots, maybe even snippets of video.

I would say programming is not the same as coding. Soon, we may not need to code because of the advancement of AI, but we will still need to program for a while.

There is a very simple but still interesting consequence of the pigeonhole principle. No matter how well you mix your Rubik’s cube, every side will have at least two pieces of the same color.

Companies like to slap subscriptions on everything; I think in many cases, they are hurting themselves. I probably would be okay with paying $1 for the service I needed, but then they offer $1/year. Nope… I pass.

A lot of timeless art was made during the artist’s struggles, in poverty. The Starry Night by van Gogh was created while he was in an asylum; Don Quixote was written from prison. I don’t feel we should intentionally put people in struggle to benefit the rest of humanity. Let people have fun and be happy; if we will have less quality games, less inspiring movies, it is ok.

2 years ago, Vladimir Putin started a special military operation in Ukraine. It is still going. 😞

I tried Palworlds for 10 minutes, but my frames were really bad (about 10 FPS). I think it is because I have 3 GPUs and Linux, so the game got confused.

You know, I mentioned we have all the necessary tools to just focus on making products. Can someone smart distract from saving humanity and spend some little time making shader compilers faster, please?

Do you know that emacs has a better version of man pages? It’s called woman.

I think one of the facets of Richard Feynman’s brilliance is his ability to explain phenomena directly using normal human language; he explains things in simple terms, and at the end, he just mentions casually: BTW, this thing we call superposition.

I found that sometimes I get stuck when trying to understand something because I am approaching it from terminology to the actual thing. For example, I had a hard time understanding what is a database or .net. I think we can use Feynman’s approach in explaining computer science concepts. Like stating the problem, we need a room full of computers to run servers, to serve web-sites. It can be some 3rd party company and they can rent you computer powers. BTW which is called cloud.

I am not as good as Richard Feynman, but I hope you understood what I mean.

I never needed glasses; Now I need reading glasses. It is such a pain, they dig in my nose bridge, dust affects the optics, it is hard to clean them, I cannot touch my face. I cannot wrap my head around of the fact, for the rest of my life I have to deal with it.

It is below my paycheck. I’ll happily do it. 🙂

App developers cannot be wrong: X Window System, Xbox, Xcode, macOS X, Xerox, Xfinity, xfce, x86, xz, excel. We must use ‘X’ in the product name. More ‘Xes’ is better. How about measuring the size of the company by the number of ‘Xes’? Triple X tech firm Tesla… 😛

If you need a virtual monitor for your Quest under Linux, you can use Immersed https://immersed.com/. It is not FOSS but has a free as beer option. It’s just a regular app on the Oculus app store, no need to switch to developer mode, no need to install Side Quest, no need to build from source code.

You can use the USB-C direct connection to minimize input lag; in this case, you will need to switch to developer mode, and I think it will also work in offline mode. I did not test that scenario though.

I have a Quest 2, and sometimes it is nice to lay down in bed and do something on my laptop without needing to go to my desk. Also, I am thinking of trying this setup outdoors (camping, for example).

It does work with SteamDeck; I have a USB-C hub, so I can have a direct connection and charge Quest and SteamDeck at the same time. I want to see how gaming is going to be on that setup.

I want to mention that it is only for virtual screens; it does not have integration with SteamVR. So if you want to play PC VR games, you need to look at other options like ALVR.

Did you see the famous writer’s meltdown about Twitter? I think it would be funny if Elon Musk buys Microsoft and renames Windows to XWindow. The nice thing is he doesn’t need to rename Xbox.

I remember how I started playing Minecraft about 10 years ago. I died a couple of times from zombies; I decided to switch to Peaceful mode. I learned how to make glass and built a house out of it. After this, I made a small swimming pool. And I went to sleep and dreamed about walking on the network of shallow swimming pools at night lit by torches. This is how I was hooked on Minecraft.

I want to learn how to make those sorts of games, then people would dream about and feel happy.

I would probably be happy to delegate the performance review to the AI. I really do not like writing my self-review and providing feedback about my manager. And now we need to do this stupid R&D tax thingy.

I need to check at some point at Damn Small Linux https://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

For my game, I need some distribution with bash, vim, emacs, and g++. G++ is the tough part; it’s quite big.

man console_codes I do not need the internet either. Wut, wut?

I put the Internet upside down, chasing console codes and ESC sequences. And they are in the man page. LOL

BTW, I figured out the collision issue. The Poseable Mesh Component does not have collisions anymore. It has all flags and settings but they do nothing. They have an explanation for that, but I did not get it. I think it is just bad programming. Anyways, the Skeletal Mesh Component does have collisions but I need to make an AnimBlueprint and drive bones from the Blueprints, not ideal but it is what it is.

The snap version of Slack does not work with my setup, something is broken with the studio’s 2FA. I need to make the RPM version of Slack work. Here are the steps, so next time when I need to update Slack, I can find it here.

Download the RPM from the Slack website. Currently, it is slack-4.36.140-0.1.el8.x86_64.rpm.

Run the following bash commands:

sudo alien -g slack-4.36.140-0.1.el8.x86_64.rpm
cd slack-4.36.140
sudo emacs debian/control # change slack -> slack-im
sudo emacs debian/changelog # change slack -> slack-im
sudo fakeroot debian/rules binary
sudo dpkg -i ../slack-im_4.36.140-1.1_amd64.deb

I realized I don’t have some certain basic cables, for example just vanilla USB-A to USB-A. All different Zoo of cables, lightning to USB-A, USB-C to USB-A, some exotic ones like USB-C female to USB-A, some ancient ones Mini-USB to USB-A, some old ones Micro-USB to USB-A. I put everything upside down, I do not have USB-A to USB-A.
